Distant Reiki - My Tools

The idea of working with energy from a distance can be a difficult one to get your head around. The idea of working with energy in general is hard to explain but when you experience it, somehow it makes sense and feels totally natural.
Working at a distance, my friend assures me, can be explained by quantum physics. Don't expect me to get into that area of science as that is one subject I avoided in school as it seemed fiendishly difficult and involved lots of calculations and far too much maths!
I much preferred art and english where I could use my creativity and my vivid imagination.
Both of those are really useful when I send distant Reiki. It's all about visualisation.
Now you might say that's just making things up in your head but when I give feedback at the end of the session and the person receiving the healing tells me their experience mirrors mine, then I know I have truly connected with them and helped them to shift something energetically. We experience the session together even though I may be miles away. The farthest I've sent Reiki for someone is to Australia and it feels exactly the same as sending it to the next room. When you work with Reiki distance is irrelevant and every time feels miraculous!
So to give you some idea of my preparation before a session, I have a specific routine I use each time. First I make sure I am hydrated and not hungry. If I need to I will have a small snack before beginning so that my empty tummy doesn't distract me. I use the same room and the same chair if I am at home. I can send Reiki from anywhere but when I'm at home I have a special place that I have used to send Reiki hundreds of times. I make sure I won't be disturbed and will be warm enough. I use a blanket to wrap myself in as my body temperature usually drops slightly as I work.

Next I will use either white sage, bog myrtle of Palo Santo wood to smudge both the room and myself. This will remove any negative energy before I begin. If these different materials for smudging interest you I plan to write about them in more detail in another blog post and will add a link here. The purpose of smudging is to create a clear space to work in and for my energy to be as clear as possible so that I do not bring anything unwanted to the recipient of the Reiki. This is very important and something I take very seriously. Think of it as energetic sanitisation.

I will sometimes use crystals to help support me when I do this work. I use pieces of Hematite in my pockets to help me remain grounded as I work with energy. It's easy in Reiki work to become ungrounded and floaty so I often use these stones to keep me rooted into the earth and in reality. They also have protective qualities.

I also use a large piece of rose quartz near to my heart chakra to help keep my heart open as I work. This helps me to remain non-judgemental and compassionate towards the recipient of the Reiki. The heart is the bridge between our more animal lower chakras and our more spiritual upper chakras. It is also the bridge between heaven and earth. All the energy I filter through my body travels through my heart before it goes out to the person receiving it so it is important that I support this area in particular.
Talking of support, I do my work within a team and I call in all kinds of help before I begin. My team comes from both the Reiki and the Shamanic traditions and has been built up over the last 15 years. It gradually changes over time and always includes an invitation to any angels or ancestors of the person receiving who wish to help. It's really comforting to work in this way because I never feel alone and can ask for guidance at any stage if I am unsure of what to do for the best.
I'll write more about what happens in the actual session in another post.
At the end I thank and release each member of my team and brush off energetically or wash my hands to break the connection with the recipient. Then I will send feedback, either by message or voice note.
I love doing this work and it never ceases to amaze me when I get feedback from the recipient about how they experienced the session.
